The authorities transferred 9,000 sq.ft. of playground for the police station BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court has permitted the Alumni Association of Mysore Medical College (MMC) to implead the Secretary of the Urban Development Department (UDD) in its petition challenging the grant of a portion of the college playground for the construction of a police station. The association said Mysore Medical College is one of the prestigious institutions in India and that it was established 80 years ago. For college useIt said in the 1960s, the Jeevarayanakere playground was handed over to the college for its use. Since then, the grounds were being used by the college for conducting various sports activities. Land transferIt said on September 26, 2007, the authorities, without informing either the college or college principal, transferred 9,000 sq.ft. of the 54,491 sq.ft. playground to the police station for the construction of the Devaraja police station. Contests transferThe association contested the transfer of the land by the Department of Urban Development and said it is illegal and against the norms. It urged the court to stay the transfer. It had also filed an application to implead the department secretary. Justice N.K. Patil allowed the application and directed the Registry to implead the UDD Secretary as one of the parties. He adjourned further hearing of the case.
