CHANDIGARH: A public interest litigation filed by an Army officer challenging the Haryana Government’s policy of granting entertainment tax exemption only to those defence personnel who turn up in full military uniform has made the Government remove the conditional dress code to qualify for the discount. The litigation was filed by Lt. Alifa Akbar from Chandimandir, 15 km from here, challenging the stipulation of wearing the uniform on the ground that it made the entire provision redundant and impractical since military rules prohibit wearing of the uniform when personnel are moving around in civilian areas off-duty. The State of Haryana offers entertainment tax exemption to defence personnel in all theatres, cinemas and multiplexes. The defence personal have to pay only the admission fee, thereby resulting in a discount of about 30 per cent on all tickets. According to the order under Rule 23 of the Punjab Entertainment Duty Rules, in order to avail themselves of exemption, defence personnel had to produce their identity cards and deposit a prescribed certificate at the ticket counter and must also be wearing their full military uniform to prove their identity.
