PUDUKOTTAI: A sum of Rs. 2.08 crores was disbursed to a total of 784 women beneficiaries at a function organised jointly by the Social Welfare Department and Integrated Child Development Scheme held here on Saturday. A majority of the beneficiaries – 737 got marriage assistance to the tune of Rs. 2.05 crores. Speaking on the occasion, the State Social Welfare Minister, P. Geetha Jeevan said that the state government attached top priority for the socio-economic uplift of women. Due care was also taken for imparting vocational and career programme training to women in the state. She said the Chief Minister had sanctioned Rs. 130 crores for the marriage assistance scheme during the current financial year, of which Rs. 25 crores had been disbursed so far. As many as 28,000 applications were under scrutiny. The Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests, S. Regupathi said about 9,000 beneficiaries had been sanctioned assistances to the tune of Rs.11.76 crores to the district by the Social Welfare Department so far. The president of the District Panchayat, C. Muthusamy, Chairperson of Pudukottai Municipality, Ramathilagam Udaiyappan were among those who spoke. Earlier Ms. Geetha Jeevan visited the orphanage and inspected the working women’s hostel and also the Government School for the Deaf. The District Social Welfare Officer, K. Alagu Selvi and Programme Officer, Integrated Child Development Scheme, T. Mangaiyarkarasi explained the facilities available at these institutes.
