Three persons hurt in blast at Polasara

Staff Reporter

It is suspected that bombs are being manufactured at the house

BERHAMPUR: Three persons, including a 10-year-old child, were seriously injured when a blast occurred at a secret crude bomb making unit at Deulapedhi street at Polasara in Ganjam district on Friday night.

It again hinted at the easy manufacturing and availability of crude bombs in Ganjam district.

The blast occurred at the house which was being used as the secret den for manufacturing bombs while processions for Ganesh idols were on at Polasara. Initially, people thought it was some cracker used by the merrymakers in the immersion procession of Ganesh Puja. But the small house was where bombs were being made was severely damaged in the blast.

People could manage to rescue three persons from the spot of the mishap. They had received burns as well as injuries from pellets used inside the crude bombs.

The injured were 10-year-old Basant Sahu, Shankar Jani (30) and Gouri Pradhan (32). The child was playing near the house. Basant and Gouri had to be shifted to the MKCG Medical College Hospital.

Police personnel from Polasara police station started investigation into the case.

It was suspected that they were manufacturing bombs to provide them to miscreants for their use during group clashes during urban elections. It may be noted that a month back three rag-pickers of the city were seriously injured when they stepped on crude bombs hidden in a garbage dump. In the past two children of Ambapua area of the city had also received serious injuries when the ignorant children tried to play cricket with the crude bombs which they found from a field. Use of crude bombs is quite common in group clashes in all villages of Ganjam district as well as Berhampur city.

According to policemen of the district the main reason behind this crude bomb culture in Ganjam district since decades is the easy availability of explosive chemicals for the criminals.

As unlicensed fireworks and crackers manufacturing units are in large number at villages like Nalabanta, there is presence of large quantity of illegally stored explosive chemicals. The miscreants therefore have an easy access to these explosive chemicals and use it to manufacture bombs.
