Samajam lines up a host of celebrations for Onam

Banana and jackfruit chips will be sold at the markets

Bangalore: Onam is celebrated with much fervour every year, and Kerala Samajam has lined up a host of celebrations in anticipation of the festival. On Sunday at 9 a.m, the Onam Market or “Onachantha” will be inaugurated by MLA for K.R. Puram Nandish Reddy at Jubilee School in Dooravaninagar.

The samajam, which is celebrating 25 years of its existence on Sunday, is doubly enthused about this year’s Onam Market, which has been held for 24 years. Continuing with the ongoing competitions in Jubilee School, the c.

For those who want to stock up on banana and jackfruit chips, specialities made out of “ethapazham” or a variety of plantains, a visit to the market is a must. Pickles such as garlic, lemon and mango made by the ladies wing of the samajam will also be available. Kerala handloom cloth, in all forms, from saris to mundus, will also be part of the market.

“We are selling all things at a nominal price,” said Denis Paul, general secretary of the samajam. “Even at the inauguration our students will greet the dignitaries with ‘talapoli’ or a traditional plate with flowers used in Kerala,” he added emphasising that the entire programme will be done as authentically as possible. The students will also display ‘pookalam’ or designs made with flowers.Bangalore Malayalees Association is holding an “Onachantha” from September 8 to 11 in 2nd Cross of Kavery Nagar in Murugeshpalya.

Yeshwanthpur Kerala Samajam’s “Onachantha” will be held from September 9 to11at the samajam hall on 1st Main Road, Yeshwanthpur.

Deccan Cultural Society of Byatarayanapura, Mysore Road, will hold the market from September 9 to 11 at the Society Silver Jubilee Hall in Byatarayanapura, Mysore Road.

Bharat Electronics Malayali Association (BELMA) will hold the market on September 10 and 11 in BELMA office in Jalahalli.

Vidyaranyapuram Kairali Samajam is also holding an “Onachantha” at 4th Block, BEL Layout in Vidyaranyapura.

Hosur Kairali Samajam will hold the market in their office on Bagalur Road, Hosur, from September 9 to 11.
