Six held for Chathurthi clashes

Mettupalayam: The Mettupalayam Police have registered cases against six persons in connection with the clashes that took place between two groups on Friday night during and immediately after the Vinayakar Chaturthi idol immersion procession.

It is learnt that pelting of stones in counter to raising slogans led to damage to the windscreens of nearly 15 vehicles.

The police registered cases against the Hindu outfit activists and Manikandan and five others have been arrested.

Similarly, another case of clash during the chaturthi idol immersion celebration was reported at Veerakeralam on the outskirts of the City late on Friday night. Police said that a bus was stoned by miscreants besides hurling acid on the participants of the idol immersion. Police rushed additional reinforcements to Veerakeralam, Thondamuthur and Perur areas and a case has been registered.

150 years of policing

To commemorate the beginning of the 150th year of the Madras Presidency Police and the Tamil Nadu Police, the Coimbatore City police have begun the commemorative year long celebrations by planting saplings at police office premises.

City Police Commissioner, K.C. Mahali, Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, Sanjay Arora, Assistant Commissioner of Police, A.S. Nandakumar, Inspector Balamurugan and others planted saplings at the City Police office on Saturday.

Agitated

Agitated Desiya Murpokky Dravidar Kazhagam (DMDK) activists thronged the Peelamedu police station protesting against the removal of the banner put up by the party in connection with the demonstration to be held on Sunday near Red Cross Society Buildings on Huzur road.

The banners were placed welcoming the party leader Vijaykanth who was scheduled to take part in the demonstration condemning the erratic power supply situation in the State.
