HYDERABAD: House owners in Secunderabad Cantonment can look forward to enhancing their property value with defence authorities seriously considering relaxing building norms to allow more Floor Space Index (FSI).

Union Minister of State for Defence M. M. Pallam Raju announced at a public meeting held on Saturday evening that the new FSI norms were being studied by his Ministry and it would be in tune with the existing rules prevailing in the neighbouring municipal corporation.

The probable change in building norms would be made applicable for all 62 cantonments in the country, he said, while assuring that his Ministry was trying its best to improve civic infrastructure of civilian areas in the Cantonments especially SCB.

A Rs. 130 crore plan to improve water supply has been prepared for approval under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Scheme.

“There are also lot of poor people here and with the deemed municipal status for all cantonments after the new Cantonment Act of 2006, they all are eligible for welfare schemes,” he said.

Mr. Raju pointed out the SCB administration had taken up several development works like development of parks and open spaces. He promised a positive decision would be taken towards allotting Hashmathpet trench land for Cantonment staff for houses construction as also compensation to the poor whose properties were affected in road widening.

Minister for Energy Mohd. Ali Shabbir declared that steps would be taken to form women self-help groups, as many as 2,500 of them in the area in the next few weeks. The groups would be eligible for the three per cent interest scheme (‘pavala vaddi’) and can take loans up to Rs. 5 lakh.

Cantonment MLA G. Sayanna explained about the inadequate civic infrastructure in SCB. SCB President Brig. Binoy Poonnen, VP J. Pratap, Principal Director Ashwani Kumar, CEO V. Premchand, DEO S. Balakrishna and ward members were present.
