Amman temple to be reopened tomorrow

SALEM: Acting on a Madras High Court order, the district administration will reopen the Draupathi Amman Temple at Kandampatti here on September 8.

Salem Police Commissioner K. Vanniaperumal told The Hindu that the decision was taken at a recent meeting here. The temple would be opened in the presence of the Salem Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO). The temple was kept closed for nearly a year following a dispute between Vanniyars and Dalits over the entry of the latter. Viduthalai Siruthaigal Katchi leader Thol. Tirumavalavan approached the Madras High Court, which on August 28 directed the Salem RDO to reopen the temple within four weeks. — Special Correspondent
