Triumphant day for India: Mulford

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: United States Ambassador David C. Mulford on Saturday welcomed the consensus of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) and congratulated the government and people of India on the historic agreement that would end India’s nuclear isolation.

Hailing the September 6 development as a “triumphant day” for India, Mr. Mulford said: “The Nuclear Suppliers Group consensus reached in Vienna today [Saturday] is the culmination of years of hard work and cooperation between India and the United States to bring India into the global civil nuclear mainstream.”

“I would like to recognise the vision and dedication of President Bush and Prime Minister Singh in achieving this remarkable breakthrough. Today’s [Saturday] agreement on a waiver for India will strengthen global non-proliferation. It will also permit India to address its critical energy requirements and contribute importantly to protecting our global environment. We will now move forward to accomplish the final step with our Congress,” Mr. Mulford said, according to an American Embassy statement.
