MADURAI: Rate of incidence of Human Immuno Virus/Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome is coming down in the country, according to Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss. During his visit to Government Rajaji Hospital here on Saturday, where he inspected facilities offered to patients, the Minister said that HIV/AIDS had been controlled to a great extent in the country, which was also acknowledged by the UNAIDS. Listing the achievements of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), which had gained global attention, he said under it, the Centre had sanctioned Rs.800 crore for the Tamil Nadu Government for several health schemes, including modernisation of primary health sub-centres. Commending the NRHM for the silent revolution, he said in an attempt to reduce maternal mortality rate, an accredited social health activist had been appointed for every village in the country to help pregnant women visit primary health centres for antenatal check-ups. Traditional medicinesHe said arrangements had been made to provide Siddha and Ayurveda treatment to those who preferred traditional medicines. Having been part of the international Framework Convention on Tobacco Control of World Health Organisation, the country had to honour the agreement, which implied severe tobacco control measures, said Dr. Anbumani. In response to the Tamil Nadu Government Doctors’ Association’s plea to rectify pay anomalies, he said the State government should come forward to increase the pay of government doctors on a par with those in other States.
