Karunanidhi criticises Jayalalithaa

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Saturday criticised All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa for demanding Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s resignation on the India-United States civilian nuclear agreement.

In a statement, he said Ms. Jayalalithaa had been organising demonstrations in every area of the State and asking for resignation of Ministers.

Now, she had gone a step further in asking for the Prime Minister’s resignation. Was the Bharatiya Janata Party, with which she tried to align, opposed to the nuclear deal? Was she trying to rope in the Communists?

Ms Jayalalithaa had made her demand knowing that elections would be held in a year.

On the problem of power shortage, Mr. Karunanidhi said it was prevalent in all States.

Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami had gone to New Delhi to secure maximum quantum of power. The government was taking steps to lessen the hardship of people.

He thanked Dr. Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi for appreciating Tamil Nadu on the State’s track record in women’s education. He welcomed the Madras High Court’s order, allowing a woman to perform pujas at a temple in Madurai district.
