This film festival belongs to kids

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As many as 78 films made by and for children will be screened at the Children’s Film Festival set to open at the Science and Technology Museum on September 8. The festival package has been put together by the State Institute of Educational Technology.

Competition for films made by children will be in two categories — for the primary school and secondary school sections.

While 21 films will compete in the primary category, 20 will figure in the secondary school one.

According to SIET officials each film in these categories will be accompanied by a certificate that the film’s script, direction, set design and narration has been done by students themselves and that expert advice has been sought only for camera work, editing, graphics and animation.

The films that have been accepted for competition have social, educational and environmental themes. Some films are also based on works of fiction.

The films that have been made for children come under two categories, video section and interactive section. The 37 films in the video section have been sub-divided into three — films made for the age groups 5 to 8 and 9 to 13 and those made for secondary/ senior secondary students.

There will be awards for the best script, direction, camera work, editing, background score, sound recording, set designing, graphics, animation, dubbing/narration.

In all, 45 awards would be given away at the Festival. Students identified as best directors would be given an award in memory of P. Ramdas the director of the Malayalam film ‘Newspaper Boy.’

The film festival would be inaugurated at 9 a.m. on September 8 by Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports M. Vijayakumar.

The festival awards would be given away at the valedictory ceremony on September 10 by Speaker K. Radhakrishnan. According to SIET officials, entry to the festival would be free. All students who participate in the festival would be given certificates.
