The modernisation works estimated to cost Rs. 138 cr. Rs. 12.8 cr sanctioned for wall of geo-tubes Kakinada: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has given administrative clearance for the modernisation of Yeleru canals, which is estimated to cost Rs 138 crore. The technical features are being evaluated and the final nod is expected soon, according to Kakinada MP M.M Pallam Raju. He said in a press release that a delegation of Ministers, MPs, MLAs and MLCs from the district secured an assurance to this effect during their recent meeting with the Chief Minister in Hyderabad. As regards the mitigation of coastal erosion at Uppada village, material worth Rs 3 crore has been moved to the project site. Construction of a wall of geo-tubes nearly 2-km long will be taken up soon according to the recommendations of the Central Water and Power Research Station. Unique projectThe Department of Irrigation and Command Area Development of Andhra Pradesh has sanctioned Rs 12.8 crore for the unique project owing to Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah’s initiative. The MP has further stated that the Ministry of Railways was sincerely examining the long-pending proposal to lay a railway line between Kakinada and Pitapuram in the wake of the State Government’s assurance to bear the entire cost of land required for the tracks. The Railway Board would not sanction any project whose rate of return is less than 14 percent, hence the State’s undertaking to shell down the cost of acquiring land. Mr. Pallam Raju said the Central Government had accorded permission for setting up an IT (Information Technology) – specific SEZ at Sarpavaram in Kakinada to give a fillip to IT and ITES (Information Technology Enabled Services) sectors which have already achieved commendable progress in the port city, led by Infotech Enterprises and US-based Avineon. They are rapidly expanding their operations here.
