PALAKKAD: Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac inaugurated the “Green the Gap” scheme at Chekkuzhy in Akathethara panchayat limits, near here, on Sunday. The plan is to afforest vacant land in villages in the 45-km natural Palakkad Gap. The Minister said that 40 hectares of government land in the panchayat area would be afforested under the scheme. If the entire government land and the barren land estimated as 9,283 hectares were afforested, 15 crore trees could be planted. In one hectare, 1,600 trees could be planted. In the current financial year, 10 lakh trees would be planted in the gap area. This would provide Rs.5 crore as wages for planting under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme.
