KHAMMAM: The zilla parishad general body meeting witnessed heated discussion on the issue of shortage of fertilizers here on Sunday. Members of the TDP, the CPI and the CPI(M) wanted the distribution streamlined as farm operations in the NSP ayacut entered crucial phase with the release of water to the second zone under the canal system. They blamed it on the government and wanted steps to support the farmer. Members of the opposition parties squatted in front of the podium on the fertilizer issue. Delay in despatchMinister for Vaidya Vidhana Parishad Vanama Venkateswar Rao and district Collector Shashibhushan Kumar assured the members that the demand for complex fertilizers would be met. The Collector explained that the delayed despatches resulted in short-supply and there was no need to get panicky. The Agriculture Department officials informed the general body that some 9.70 lakh bags of fertilizers of all brands were distributed through all the outlets in the district so far. It included some 48,606 tonnes of DAP. There would be no scarcity of complex fertilizers as well. The supplies would be as per the requirement assessed for August and September. Some members of the TDP, the CPI(M) and the CPI staged a protest by acting as fertilizer vendors selling 100 grams of each of the brands. They were rounded up by the police and let off subsequently. The opposition members staged a walkout on the state of affairs in schools and implementation of the mid0day meal scheme. G. Vijaya Lakshmi, zilla parishad chairperson, presided.
