This Day That Age
The White House said on September 6 the United States stood ready to resume ambassadorial talks with People’s China on Far East problems. In a statement issued after President Eisenhower held a 90-minute conference with his top advisers, the White House also called on People’s China to renounce the use of force in the Formosa area. The statement said that President Eisenhower had taken “particular note” of the reported radio statement of Mr. Chou En-lai indicating that the Chinese were prepared to resume ambassadorial talks with the United States “in order to contribute further to the safeguarding of peace.” The White House added: “We hope the reported statement of Mr. Chou En-lai is responsive to the urging, contained in our Sept. 4 policy statement, that “armed forces should not be used to achieve territorial ambitions”, although such renunciation of force need not involve renouncing claims or the pursuit of policies by peaceful means.”
