dated September 8, 1958: Britain’s tele-exchange

Britains’ first automatic tele-exchange went into operation in Leeds on September 1, enabling subscribers to make long-distance calls for two pence. The G.P.O. intends to extend this service to Singapore, Hongkong and Istanbul. There are also tentative plans for links with Lagos, Bombay, Athens and Karachi. Under the new charging system, subscribers pay only for the time used instead of the previous three-minute minimum call.
