first-hand look: Collector Pankaj Kumar Bansal inspecting a site at Kazhanivasal in Karaikudi on Sunday. KARAIKUDI: The State Government plans to set up a district headquarters hospital here for which the process of selecting a site has been initiated. The decision has assumed significance in the backdrop of the announcement of establishing a medical college in Sivaganga, the district headquarters, for which the foundation stone is likely to be laid next month by Chief Minister M. Karunandhi. A team of officials led by Collector Pankaj Kumar Bansal and Sub-Collector (Devakottai) Tharus Ahamed inspected several locations on Sunday. After much deliberations, the Government land available at Kazhanivasal and Tahsildar Nagar off Tiruchi Road have been short-listed. Mr. Bansal told The Hindu that the proposed medical college at Sivaganga would meet the long-felt demand of the district, as it would have a state-of-the-art hospital. After its inauguration, the district headquarters hospital would function from Karaikudi. Though 10 acres of land was enough for establishing a district headquarters hospital, it was proposed to acquire around 50 acres of land for it since one more medical college might be set up in the district. Revenue officials had been asked to send a proposal to facilitate the transfer of identified land to the Government immediately. Initially, a 100-bedded hospital would come up for which enough funds were available. A proposal would be sent to the Government to sanction additional funds for setting up more facilities. The existing taluk hospital in Karaikudi would be shifted to the new integrated hospital complex.
