Constable held for murder of MGR’s relative

Special Correspondent

He confesses to having aided Banu, victim’s relative

He had engaged five persons to commit the crime

CHENNAI: The murder of K. Vijayan alias Vijayakumar (53), a relative of former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran, was masterminded by a police constable at the instance of the victim’s relative, N. Banu.

The Crime Branch CID police on Monday arrested three persons, including the policeman, in connection with the sensational murder.

Disclosing this at a press conference, Additional Director-General of Police (CBCID) Archana Ramasundaram said Banu had a dispute with her brother Raja alias Dilipan alias Ramachandran over taking control of one of the schools run by the family following which the latter filed a civil suit.

Banu felt that Vijayan was inciting Raja to act against her and decided to do away with him. She entered into a criminal conspiracy with Karuna, working as a constable in the Nandambakkam police station, and paid him Rs. 4 lakh to murder Vijayan.

The constable engaged Suresh (23) of Pazhavanthangal, Karthik (26) of Washermanpet, Solomon (21) of Washermanpet, Deena (23) of Korukkupettai and Karthik (25) of Madipakkam to murder Vijayan.

After surveying the movements of the victim for a few days, they followed him in a car on the night of June 4, 2008. While Deena and Karthik came on a motorcycle, others used the vehicle to dash Vijayan’s car twice. When he got down to question the driver, Deena and Karthik hit him hard on the head with an iron pipe resulting in his death.

Ms. Archana said a special team arrested Karuna, who confessed to having aided Banu in killing Vijayan. An expensive car and a knife were seized from him. Banu was also arrested. “He was on duty till the police arrested him. We are investigating his antecedents,” she said.

The team apprehended Suresh and seized the weapon used to commit the murder. A van purchased by him with the proceeds of the crime was also taken into custody. Efforts were on to arrest the others accused in the case.
