More seats for degree, PG courses
Special Correspondent
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State government has issued an order increasing the number of seats in degree and post-graduate courses in government colleges and university teaching departments by 20 per cent so as to implement the reservation introduced for students belonging to backward communities from the current academic year.
Another order has been issued for reserving seats for degree and PG courses for those below the poverty line (BPL) in the forward communities also from the current academic year. The seats for these courses will be increased by 10 per cent in government colleges and 7.5 per cent in university departments.
An official press note said here on Monday that the seats had been increased in order to accommodate the students from the backward communities without any additional commitment. The percentage of reservation for the various communities is as follows — Ezhava – 8; Muslims – 7; LC/SIUC – 1; OBC (Christian) – 1; and OBC (Hindu) - 3. The annual family income should be below Rs. 2.5 lakh so as to get the benefit of reservation. The BPL certificate issued by the Village Officer can be used for the purpose.
The financial assistance being given to girls of the Muslim and Nadar communities will be extended to their counterparts in the other backward communities also.
The government made it clear that all the communities that did not enjoy reservation facility would be considered as forward communities.
