Cabinet allots 16,000 acres for power, port projects

Land for two thermal power projects in Srikakulam district

Over 3,000 acres for thermal power station at Kakarapalli in Srikakulam

Vadarevu port to get 6,493.19 acres in 14 villages at Rs 1.52 lakh an acre

HYDERABAD: The Cabinet has decided to allot an extent of 16,249 acres of Government land to two thermal power projects in the private sector in Srikakulam district and to the greenfield ports in Nizampatnam and Vadarevu. Land will, however, be allotted for a price.

At a meeting here on Monday, the Cabinet cleared allotment of 3,333 acres spread over four villages to East-Coast Energy Limited at Rs 85,000 an acre for setting up a 2,600-MW thermal power station at Kakarapalli in Srikakulam district.

Briefing reporters later, Information Minister A. Ramanarayan Reddy said another 972.69 acres of land at Sompeta would be allotted to Nagarjuna Constructions Limited at Rs 80,000 an acre for a 1,980 MW thermal station.

Exclusive right

The Vadarevu port, being developed in Prakasam district by VAPIC company, would get 6,493.19 acres in 14 villages at Rs 1.52 lakh an acre with the condition to extend the “exclusive right” of the already developed Krishnapatnam port up to 30 km towards Vadarevuu.

Nizampatnam port, under construction in Guntur district, would get 5,451 acres in seven villages at the same price.

The Cabinet decision to alienate such large extent of land to pipeline projects is not likely to cause any agitation by farmers as all this land either belonged to the Government or was assigned land taken back from individuals/industries for not putting the same to use for the stated purpose, the Minister explained.

Recent policy

Answering questions, Mr Reddy said the Cabinet’s decision was in tune with the recent policy announced by the Government not to acquire private land for projects any more.
