New rice levy policy finalised
Special Correspondent
A. Ramanarayan Reddy
HYDERABAD: A new rice procurement policy imposing restrictions on sale of rice by millers to buyers in other States, was finalised for the State by the Cabinet at its meeting here on Monday.
The new policy will be implemented from this kharif season once the necessary clearances are obtained from the Centre.
The policy, which specifies the levy-sale ratio at 1:1/2:1/2 in contrast to the existing formula of 1:1, allows the miller to sell only half a tonne of rice to buyers outside the State and another half within the State, for every tonne surrendered as levy. Under the old formula, the miller was allowed to sell one tonne to purchasers in other States if he surrendered one tonne as levy.
Speaking to reporters later, Information Minister A. Ramanarayan Reddy said the new formula was adopted to ensure liberal availability of rice within the State and control its prices in the open market. The Cabinet took a decision enhancing the compensation payable to sheep-growers under Sheep Insurance Scheme against accidental death of sheep to Rs. 2,000 from Rs. 1,000 in case of adult sheep, and to Rs. 1,000 from Rs. 500 for sheep aged below one year.
