Siwach advances

NEW DELHI: It is a joy to win your first ATP point.

Playing sensibly and according to the demands of the situation against a free-hitting opponent, the 19-year-old Nikunj Siwach beat Yannick Nelord 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the first round of the PNB $15,000 ITF men’s Futures tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Monday.

The victory ensured him an ATP point.

After successfully negotiating three rounds of the qualifying event, and giving himself the luxury of competing in a main draw of a professional tournament for the first time in 30 tournaments spanning over three years, Nikunj was able to capitalise on his chances though he missed an opportunity to serve out the match at 5-4 in the second set.

In another match, qualifier Abhijeet Tiwari demolished fellow qualifier I-Ta Chen of Chinese Taipei for the loss of two games in 33 minutes, to ensure his first ATP point.

He will meet the winner of the match between the eighth-seeded Divij Sharan and Rupesh Roy.
