Appumarar Thrissur: Percussion expert Chakkamkulam Appumarar passed away at his residence at Thalore, near here, on Tuesday morning. He was 85. A ‘panchari melam’ maestro, Chakkamkulam Appumarar had led the percussion ensemble at many temple festivals, including the ‘Elanjithara melam’ of Thrissur pooram. He was also an expert in ‘sopana sangeetham,’ ‘idakka,’ ‘thimila’ and ‘marapaani.’ Chakkamkulam Appumarar was born to Kunjukutti Marasyar and Pantharathil Narayanan Marar at Chakkamkulangara in Thrissur district. He gave his first ‘Thayambaka’ recital at the age of 15. Chakkamkulam Appumarar was the last in the famous ‘Appu-trio’ — the others being Peruvanam Appumarar and Kumarapuram Appumarar. He was the recipient of the first Pallavur Appumarar award constituted by the State government. He had received many other honours, such as ‘Mela Kalathilakam,’ ‘Kalarathnam,’ ‘Kalacharya,’ ‘Vadhithyarathnam’ and ‘Melacharya.’ His death is a severe loss to the percussion world, said Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran in a condolence message. District Collector V.K. Baby laid a wreath on behalf of Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran and Education Minister M.A. Baby.
