Transport Department’s drive against violations

Coimbatore: The Transport Department, Coimbatore Circle, had conducted a drive against violation of Motor Vehicle Rules for two days during the end of August and had booked 317 cases.

A release from the Deputy Transport Commissioner, T. Gunasekaran, said that a total of 2,359 vehicles were checked. The drive was conducted by seven teams in seven places in Coimbatore, Erode and the Nilgiris.

The cases detected during the drive included carrying goods, persons and animals beyond capacity, misuse of permits, plying without driving licence, Pollution under Control certificate, insurance certificate and fitness certificate, use of air horns, dazzling headlights and speeding.

Eight vehicles were detained. A total of 260 other offences were also detected.

The authorities collected Rs. 1.60 lakh as tax and proposed a compounding fee of Rs. 1.80 lakh for the offences.

A sum of Rs. 4.62 lakh was proposed as compounding fee to be realised by the respective registering authorities after adhering to procedural formalities such as serving of notices seeking explanation.

Mr. Gunasekaran said that as per the latest Government Order those seeking renewal of their heavy vehicle driving licence would have to undergo a refresher training course for a day in a recognised heavy vehicle driving training school.

Only on producing the certificate, their licence would be renewed, the release said.
