Udupi: Home Minister V.S. Acharya has said that the State Government has allotted Rs. 97 crore for the modernisation of police force in order to make the State a “fear-free zone.” Inaugurating the newly constructed police station of the Coastal Security Police on the Malpe port premises here, Dr. Acharya said that the Anti-Terrorist Cell and the Anti-Naxalite Force (ANF) were being strengthened for this purpose. The construction of new buildings for police stations of the Coastal Security Police stations had been completed in Mangalore, Udupi, Kumta, Karwar and Bhatkal by the Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation. Two high-level meetings had been held to deal with the ways and means of checking crime such as smuggling of weapons and contraband in the coastal areas. “The aim of our Government is to make the State free from crime and terrorism,” he said. An amount of Rs. 45 crore was being spent on the construction of residential quarters of police personnel. A sum of Rs. 25 crore had been provided for traffic management in Bangalore, Dr. Acharya said. Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order) A.R. Infant said that the Coastal Security Police (CSP) had been established in 1999. The aim of the unit was to curb terrorism, anti-social activities, and underworld activities. It also aimed at curbing smuggling of weapons. In the last two years, the CSP had been provided with various facilities, including vehicles, weapons and surveillance equipment. Shortly boats would be provided to the CSP. These boats were presently being constructed in Goa. A sum of Rs. 2.08 crore had been allocated for provision of surveillance equipment to be installed on the boats. The Union Government had provided Rs. 78 lakh for furniture and fixtures for the police stations of the CSP, Mr. Infant said. IGP (Western Range) A.M. Prasad welcomed the gathering. MLA Raghupati Bhat presided over the function. MLC Kota Srinivas Poojary, Superintendent of Coastal Security Police H.R. Bhagwandas, Superintendent of Police of Udupi district Pravin Pawar and Superintendent of Police of Dakshina Kannada district Satish Kumar were present.
