ALAPPUZHA: The stalemate over wage revisions in the houseboat industry here is yet to have a solution. Meanwhile, the strike called by the workers’ union and later taken over by a few houseboat owners continuing to paralyse the tourism sector in Alappuzha. The strike, which began on August 5, was about to be called off on Monday after District Collector V.K. Balakrishnan held talks with both the Kerala State Houseboat and Resort Workers’ Union and the four associations of houseboat owners. The Collector had suggested a compromise between the two sections, asking the owners to hike the employee salaries from Rs.2,000 to Rs.3,500 (the employees had demanded Rs.4,000) and the daily allowance from Rs.100 to Rs.115. While two of the owners’ association and the workers’ union agreed, two associations and a number of single boat owners disagreed.
