Kandaleru water may be released on September 15
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI: Water from Kandaleru reservoir in Andhra Pradesh is likely to be released on September 15 for the use of Chennai residents.
According to officials of the Water Resources Department, Tamil Nadu has written to the authorities concerned in the neighbouring State to release water by Wednesday.
However, release of Krishna water is likely to be postponed to September 15 as Kandaleru-Poondi canal repair works would need three or four more days for completion.
An official said the Satya Sai Trust has completed nearly 95 per cent of the work comprising lining and strengthening of the canal running to a distance of 25 km between the Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu border in Uthukottai and Poondi reservoir.
There is sufficient storage of water at Kandaleru with 36 thousand million cubic feet as against the full capacity of 68 tmcft, the official said. It would take at least two days for the water released from Kandaleru reservoir to reach the inter-State border at Uthukottai.
Though the water release period during this season is between July and October according to the 1983 agreement between the States, it has been agreed to extend release of Krishna water till November as per the request from Tamil Nadu, the official said.
