KOCHI: National champion Gaurav Gill, the first Indian to win an Asia-Pacific Championship round in Indonesia last month, will be the star to watch in the 23rd Popular Rally, the third round of the MAI Indian National Rally Championship, which begins at Nettoor near here on Friday afternoon. Team MRF’s Gill, with co-driver Musa Sherif, won the national championship last year. Arjun Balu, Lohit Urs and Arjun Rao are the other drivers in the MRF team. Former national champion Vikram Mathias, who was with MRF and JK Tyre earlier and who now drives for Red Rooster Racing, will also be seen in action in the three-day event which begins at 2.30 p.m. on Thursday with the super special stage at Nettoor. Thirty-five cars will figure in the 420-km event which has 13 special stages with a total of 115km. The Regional Sports Centre here will be the scene of action on the second day and the rally will pass through the Cochin Inernational Airport, Illythode, Bhothathankettu, Thudam, Edamalayar in Idukki before returning to Kochi. — Principal Correspondent
