VISAKHAPATNAM: The Centre has sanctioned Rs.200 crores for laying of a third railway line between Kothavalasa and Vizianagaram. A survey would also be conducted for doubling of the Simhachalam-Kirandul line, said Rajya Sabha member T. Subbarami Reddy. Addressing a media conference on Thursday, he said that he had written to the Railway Minister to provide better amenities to Visakhapatnam. He sought restoration of quota of berths for Visakhapatnam, curtailed following the extension of trains, and augmentation of berths in other trains. He said that the DRM had agreed to take up the issue with the headquarters. Mr. Subbarami Reddy also sought introduction of an overnight fast daily Express from Visakhapatnam to Chennai Egmore and back, immediate introduction of the recently announced Garib Rath between Visakhapatnam and Secunderabad, a new Superfast Express on a daily basis between Visakhapatnam and Dibrugarh, extension of Nilachal Express running between Puri and New Delhi to Visakhapatnam and Rajadhani Express running between New Delhi and Bhubaneswar to Visakhapatnam, introduction of a daily Express train between Visakhapatnam and Jaipur and between Visakhapatnam and Mangalore via Katpadi. He said that he was pursuing the matter with the Railway Ministry and expressed confidence that they would be fulfilled. He said that the extension of Platform nos. 7 and 8 would be completed in six months and provision of roofs over the platforms, to be taken up at a cost of Rs.40 lakhs, would be completed in a year. An amount of Rs.2.40 crore was sanctioned for construction of the new reservation complex and the project would be completed in a year. AirportThe Visakhapatnam International Airport would be ready by December-end. He said that Singapore and Sri Lankan airlines have expressed readiness to operate direct flights to Singapore and Colombo after inauguration of the new terminal building.
