Stage set for Bansira Sandhya

Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR: The stage is set for the sixth annual edition of Bansira Sandhya ‘an exciting evening of flute recital with 50 artistes on stage’ at the Jayadev Bhawan here on Wednesday.

A brain-child of renowned flute maestro Mohini Mohan Patnaik, who has the enviable distinction of grooming the largest number of disciples during his four decades of career as a teacher, the event is being hosted by the maestro’s Flute Academy that has all his disciples as members. “I take pride in being a teacher to so many talented flutists. Most of my disciples have been performing in India and abroad as accompanists to Odissi dancers and as soloists as well. Through this annual flute festival, I intended to bring all of them together onto a single platform to celebrate their success and our solidarity,” said the Guru, who was honoured with the coveted Sahara India Lifetime Achievement award for flute last year.

“Over the past five years, Bansira Sandhya has become a much-awaited affair for the connoisseurs and artistes’ fraternity and we are planning to present the concert in some of the major Indian cities soon,” said Mohini Mohan, who is also a reputed flutist. “Each year, we present some of our experimental works which brings a fusion between the eastern and western styles of music.”

The festival this year would feature Raag Sangam, a composition based on the dying ‘Dhrupad ang’ of music followed by Malhar Mahak, the composer said. The concert would conclude with flute fusion that would show application of the western style of rhythmic patterns in Indian classical music, he said.
