Commission begins inquiry into Haveri firing incident

Staff Correspondent

HAVERI: The Kedambady Jagannath Shetty Commission of Inquiry on Friday conducted an inspection at Hosamani Siddappa Circle here where police had opened fire on protesting farmers on June 10.

Mr. Shetty visited the spot and sought details from the officials who were present when the incident took place.

He also sought details from the policeman who opened fire on the farmers. Deputy Commissioner P.S. Vastrad, tahsildar Prashanth Nalwar and Superintendent of Police Vikash Singh Vikash were among those who accompanied members of the commission to the spot.

Later, addressing presspersons, Mr. Shetty said that the time given for the commission to complete the inquiry was inadequate and it would appeal to the State Government to extend it.

It may be recalled that the State Government had set up the commission on June 18 and given it six months’ time to complete the inquiry.

Mr. Shetty said the commission had received 120 affidavits so far in connection with the incident and it had completed the first phase of the inquiry.

Recording of the statements would be done in Bangalore and preliminary hearing would begin from September 15, Mr. Shetty added.
