Tension in court as convict cuts his neck
Staff Reporter
TIRUPATTUR: A convict cut his neck with a mysterious tool in front of the Magistrate at the Judicial Magistrate II Court on the Tirupattur Combined Court Complex on Friday, leading to tension.
According to the police, Ramalingam of Palnangkuppam near Tirupattur was undergoing a term at the Vellore Central Prison. He had been convicted in couple of murder and robbery cases. On Friday, he was brought to the Judicial Magistrate II Court in connection with a threat letter sent by him from the jail to the main witness, Rajiv, father of the ration shop employee, Jeevanantham, who had been murdered by him.
Ramalingam had befriended another convict Hansari in the prison, the police said. When Hansari was released on bail, he had gone to Palnangkuppam and threatened Rajiv that he would kill him if he testified at the court.
On Friday, Jolarpet Inspector Balakrishnan requested the Magistrate to order a day’s police custody for Ramalingam, which the Magistrate accepted. But, Ramalingam expressed fear that the police could kill him under the guise of encounter if he were granted police custody.
When the Magistrate did not accept his plea, Ramalingam cut his neck with a mysterious tool. He bled profusely and fainted. The police admitted him to Tirupattur Government Hospital. He was later referred to Vellore Government Hospital.
