Market intervention helped to keep prices in check Claims government acted with foresight THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran has expressed his happiness over the manner in which the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government has been able to keep the prices of essential commodities under control during this Onam festival. In a press release on Friday, he said the government had taken care to act with foresight and sensitivity to make this possible. This Onam came in the context of a steep cut in the allocation of rice from the Centre to the State and there was indeed the fear that the prices would go up. The Centre had promised the State some additional supply of rice for Onam, but that promise did not materialise. The State Civil Supplies Department, however, intervened in the market with strong determination to ensure that the hoarders and the black market operators could not exploit the scarcity situation at the expense of the people, the Minister said. He said the department had operated Special Onam Bazaars in all the Assembly constituencies in the State. Every commodity required for the Onam fare was available at prices far below the market prices at these bazaars. And the department was still holding buffer stock that would last another month. The department procured adequate quantity of rice from the markets in other States to make the commodity available to the poor and ordinary people at subsidised rates through the government-run rice shops.
