Supplyco registers sale of Rs.80 crore in Onam week

Special Correspondent

Prices 10% to 30% less than open market rates, say officials

Supplyco spent Rs.27.50 crore on market intervention

Sale of groceries expected to cross Rs.175 crore

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco) played a major role in keeping the open market prices essentials in check during the Onam week spending Rs.27.50 crore on market intervention and selling groceries worth Rs. 80 crore at subsidised prices.

The Corporation made some 18 lakh kits, each containing groceries worth Rs.70 available for Below Poverty Line (BPL) cardholders spending roughly Rs.12.50 crore from its kitty. Each kit contained two kg. rice, 500 grams of sugar, 100 grams of tea and 200 grams of chillies. It also sold around 12,000 kits as part of its general sales till Onam eve this month. Each of these were priced at Rs.300 and contained articles worth Rs.368.

Supplyco sources pointed out that the Corporation had not altered the prices of commodities sold through its outlets after September, 2006, and had, in fact, lowered the prices of some of the commodities in order to hold the price line. The sources claimed that the prices were 10 to 30 per cent less than the open market prices in the case of most commodities. Supplyco would take a hit of Rs.15 crore for market intervention for the general populace.

The government has sanctioned Rs. 55 crore so far this financial year to the Corporation for its market intervention efforts.

The Corporation expects its sale to cross Rs. 175 crore by month-end. The Corporation had gross sale of groceries worth Rs.134 crore during the Onam month of August last year.

The Corporation’s turnover this August was Rs.164 crore. Supplyco had registered a turnover of Rs.670 crore during the first five months of this financial year and expects its annual turnover to rise to Rs.1,600 crore by the year-end as compared to a turnover of Rs.1,207 crore with a profit of Rs.8 crore during 2007-’08.
