Contribution of chemists lauded

Special Correspondent

GUNTUR: Rich tributes were paid to Birch and Brown for their contribution to the development of organic chemistry at a national symposium organised by the PG Department of Chemistry of TJPC College here. Sponsored by SERO-UGC, Hyderabad, the two-day symposium concluded on Friday.

President of Australian Academy of Sciences Birch is famous for his discovery known as ‘Birch Reduction’. Birch Reduction had revolutionised synthetic organic chemistry as its application led to a solution of various structures of alkalaids, steroids and aromatic compounds. Herbet C. Brown is a Nobel prize winner for his discovery in Boron chemistry, which had solved many synthetic routes that were defying solutions earlier. The symposium began with a welcome address by Head of the Department of Chemistry P.S. Radha Krishna Murthy and formally inaugurated by Government General Hospital Superintendent D. Phani Bhushan. Psychologist Phani Bhushan said that the contributions of these two chemists brought revolutionary changes in the field of organic chemistry.
