Job fair at Nandanam Arts College
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: At the job fair on Friday at Government Arts College, Nandanam, it was not the usual crowd that throngs such programmes. Some of the candidates had graduated four months ago, last year or in 2006.
Some continued with higher education. Others were struggling to cement their careers. Most of them were first generation graduates, with their parents employed in the unorganised sector. Though a few of the candidates were employed in private firms, the lure of working in an IT-enabled service firm was too strong to resist. The day for the 301 candidates at the job fair began with a written test, which included an essay in English. Some of the recruiting executives of Sutherland Global Services are also from private colleges from smaller cities.
Lack of communication skills showed up in the recruitment tally with only three of the 301 candidates receiving placement orders on Friday evening. Another seven have been called for an interview later. The fair would be thrown open to all college students during the weekend.
