“New Ministry is attempting to scuttle the project to help seven private medical colleges” PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry unit of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Saturday urged the territorial government not to hand over the Puducherry Kamarajar Medical College and Research Institute (PKMCRI) project to the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) or the private sector. Referring to reports that the government was considering a proposal in this regard, secretary of the Puducherry unit of the AIADMK A.Anbalagan said the party would launch a series of agitations with the permission of its general secretary if the administration failed to retain the project in the government sector. The government had already spent Rs.95 crore for the project, which was taken up after getting the approval of the Cabinet and the Assembly, he recalled. Mr.Anbalagan accused the new Ministry headed by Chief Minister V.Vaithilingam of attempting to “scuttle the project with a view to helping seven private medical colleges” in the Union Territory. Although the ESIC had been seeking land in different States to establish medical colleges with facilities of world standard at the cost of Rs.300 crore each, the territorial government had been “misleading the public” by stating that around Rs.850 crore was required to establish the PKMCRI, he said. The government should strive to enhance infrastructure in the schools instead of providing pocket money for students, he said. On the proposal to invoke Goondas Act in the Union Territory, he said existing laws such as the National Security Act were sufficient to maintain law and order.
