Birds start to arrive at Mangalavanam

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Chirping of birds may once again enliven the Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary, if the indications are to be believed.

Birds have started arriving at the Sanctuary early this month after several migratory seasons that went without any birds in the area.

A group of 12 Sandpipers were spotted at the Sanctuary on September 3, said A. Ranjan, Divisional Forest Officer, Peechi.

“The presence of the Sandpipers is a good indication and we hope more birds will reach the sanctuary ,” he said.

The migratory bird season begins at the sanctuary in September. Large congregation of domestic migrant birds were reported from the area earlier. However, the number of visitors recorded a sharp fall puzzling the scientific community on the reasons of the birds abandoning the area. They preferred to nest in huge trees in some of the private holdings in Pandikudy in West Kochi two years back.
