Berhampur varsity not to hold student union elections

BERHAMPUR: The Berhampur university authorities decided not to hold students’ union elections in the current academic year.

According to the Post Graduate (PG) council chairman of the university, R.C. Panigrahy, this decision was taken at a high level meeting chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, Bijay Kumar Sahu. Mr. Panigrahy said the university authorities had to take up decision following requests from a large number of students. During last two academic years the Berhampur university campus has faced violent ugly violent faces of students’ politics.

The university had to be closed down sine die following serious group clashes after students’ union election in December 2006.

In 2007 also the students’ union elections led to alleged tension on the campus.

On July 27 a group of around 170 students had handed over a signed request to the Vice-Chancellor of the university in which they had requested him not to hold students’ union election in the current academic session to maintain peace on the campus.

The V-C preferred to put the request for discussion in the meeting of the syndicate of the university.

The syndicate left the decision on the V-C and PG Council chairman.

So, the V-C called up a high level meeting which was also attended by the heads of all departments, the superintendents and wardens of all hostels on Friday.
