Polls postponed at two places

BHUBANESWAR: The State Election Commission on Saturday postponed the civic polls in Phulbani municipality and G. Udaygiri Notified Area Council in violence affected Kandhamal district stating that the law and order situation was not conducive in those areas.

The elections to both the urban local bodies were scheduled to be held on September 19 along with 91 urban local bodies in the State.

Earlier, District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police of Kandhamal had given a joint report to the Election Commission recommending for postponement poll in these two urban local bodies.

They had said that no permission could be granted for election campaign in the near future as prohibitory order under Section 144 Cr.PC continued throughout the day along with night curfew in both the places.

The Home Department of the State government had also told the Commission that the law and order situation in Phulbani municipality and G. Udaygiri NAC was not conducive for holding free and fair election.

The Commission will now issue a revised schedule fixing the date of poll and schedule of subsequent events for Phulbani municipality and G. Udaygiri NAC after watching the improvement in the law and order situation when free and fair poll can be conducted.

The model code of conduct will continue to be in force as the postponement of poll in these two local bodies is purely temporarily in nature, according to an official release issued by the Commission.
