Politicians should also retire, says MLA

Staff Correspondent

Chitradurga: S.K. Basavarajan, MLA, has said that just like government employees, people’s representatives should retire at a certain age.

Speaking after inaugurating the fourth convention of the Karnataka State Retired Employees’ Association here on Saturday, he felt the retirement age of people’s representatives should be 65. Just as new vacancies were created every time government employees retired, young people should get the opportunity to enter politics when senior leaders retired.

‘Youngsters needed’

“We need youngsters in every field including politics. The best part of their presence is renewed enthusiasm and the zeal to bring about change. This will help reform the political and administrative sectors”, he said.

He, however, said the experience of retired leaders could be used to frame better policies. The Government could also incorporate the suggestions of retired government employees in resolving administrative problems.

He urged retired employees to guide the government and offer suggestions to improve the administration. As regards their demand of allocation of a site for constructing a community hall, Mr. Basavarajan promised the association that within a month, he would try and find a suitable place for the building. He also said funds would be provided from the MLA’s local area development grant for construction of the building.

District unit president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat K.M. Veeresh expressed concern over the growing neglect for the elderly. “Many people do not care to look after their parents when they become old. They seem to forget that their success is largely because of their parents’ efforts. This is a disturbing trend,” he said.

Financial aid

He promised to extend financial aid if the association wished to construct an old-age home for senior citizens.
