Five killed, seven injured in van-bus collision

The victims were going from Kadur to Banavara

CHIKMAGALUR: Five persons died and seven were injured when the van in which they were travelling collided with a KSRTC bus on the national highway near Mathighatta in Kadur taluk at about 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Two persons died on the spot, another person in Kadur hospital, the fourth died while being taken to Shimoga and the fifth in Shimoga hospital.

They have been identified as K.N. Gangadhar (42), Shivanna (40), Siddaramappa (58), Nayaz (27), driver of the van, and Muddamma (55). They hailed from various villages in Kadur taluk.

The accident is said to have occurred when the van, which was ferrying people from Kadur to Banavara, collided with the KSRTC bus while overtaking a tanker. The bus was proceeding towards Shimoga from Mysore.

Heart-rending scenes were witnessed in front of the government hospital in Kadur where bereaved relatives gathered.

Admitted

The injured have been admitted to hospital in Shimoga.

Two die in Shimoga

Two persons were killed in the early hours on Saturday when their motorbike was knocked down by a van that was coming from the opposite direction. The victims were going to Vidyanagar and passengers in the van were from Koramangala in Bangalore and were on their way to Kodachadri in Shimoga district.

The accident occurred on the Tunga bridge when the van driver tried to overtake another vehicle. The dead persons have been identified as Premkumar (20) and Manu (28).

Impact

The impact of the collision was such that Manu who was riding pillion was thrown into the river leading to his immediate death. Premkumar was injured and died in hospital.
