Fresh floods claim 13 lives so far

Special Correspondent

HYDLERABAD: The continuing heavy rain in the State, caused by the low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, has claimed 13 lives so far in six districts.

Most of the casualties took place due to drowning or in house or wall collapses. West Godavari, Nalgonda and Karimnagar districts accounted for three deaths each, Visakhapatnam two and Anantapur and Ranga Reddy one each. The two spells of floods earlier left over 130 persons dead in the State.

The flood gates of Kinnerasani, Taliperu (both in Khammam district), Maddivalasa (Srikakulam) and Koulasnala (Adilabad) were opened following heavy inflows. Meanwhile, the government continued to maintain high alert as another low pressure area is brewing in the Bay of Bengal and is likely to concentrate into a depression on Monday. Additional Commissioner, Disaster Management, G. D. Priyadarshini said the government was keeping a close watch on the situation and placed all coastal districts on the alert as further rain was expected from Monday.
