Arrangements made at Pulichintala to prevent submergence of equipment Steps being taken to release water for Chennai from Telugu Ganga canal
Nature’s bounty: Water gushing out of Singur project in Medak on Saturday. HYDERABAD: There is finally some good news for farmers under the ayacut of irrigation projects in Telangana. Sriramsagar, Singur and Nizamsagar projects began to get sizeable inflows on Saturday as a result of the rain in the catchment areas of the Godavari in Maharashtra. As much as 1.27 lakh cusecs reached Sriramsagar in spite of the existence of Babli project upstream. Currently, 40 tmcft of water is available in the dam against its full capacity of 90 tmcft. Singur and Nizamsagar, both built across the Manjira, a tributary of the Godavari, also received inflows at the rate of 55,741 cusecs and 11,740 cusecs respectively. These were the first heavy inflows of the season for them too. At present, they have storages of 25 tmcft and 9 tmcft respectively (their full levels being 30 tmcft and 17 tmcft). Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar across the Krishna continued to get heavy inflows of 1.17 lakh cusecs and 69,625 cusecs respectively. As the water level reached 589 ft in Nagarjunasagar dam, leaving only one-ft gap for its full level, two of the project’s 26 gates would be lifted on Sunday, said M. Ramachandraiah, its chief engineer. Major Irrigation Minister P. Lakshmaiah will formally press the button on Sunday evening to lift the radial gates. Officials told The Hindu that sufficient arrangements had been made at Pulichintala, a project under construction about 80 km downstream of Nagarjunasagar, to prevent submergence of equipment. Sources said arrangements had also been made to release water to Chennai from Telugu Ganga canal on Monday as sought by the Tamil Nadu government.
