NEW DELHI: The 49 the annual conference of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology and the 8th Asia Pacific Digestive Week-2008 opened in the Capital on Saturday. The four-day conference is the annual scientific meeting of regional organisation in gastroenterology and related fields held in collaboration with member societies and the four major regional bodies: the Asia Pacific Association of Gastroenterology, Asian Pacific Society of Digestive Endoscopy, Asia Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver and International Society for Digestive Surgery. “This will perhaps be the largest academic gastroenterology event ever held in India. Over 600 abstracts have been submitted which presents a wide range of research predominantly of importance to the Asia Pacific region. The importance of such forum cannot be overemphasised as the burden of gastrointestinal diseases in the Asia Pacific region is enormous. Prevalence of hepatitis B and C virus infection in this region is highest in the world. We understand that prevention early detection by appropriate screening methods in a cost effective manner is an urgent in our countries,” said S. K. Acharya, Secretary of the Organising Committee of the Asia Pacific Digestive Week-2008.
