NEW DELHI: Following the September 10 directions by the Supreme Court that the appeals against conviction of the Uphaar fire tragedy accused be heard on day-to-day basis and for full working hours, the Delhi High Court has decided to take up them for hearing as per the directions from Monday. AppealsBefore the passing of the directions by the Apex Court, the appeals, including the ones by Sushil Ansal and Gopal Ansal, were being heard by Justice H.R. Malhotra of the Court twice a week. Now Justice S. Ravinder Bhat will hear them. The Apex Court had passed the directions while cancelling the bail of Sushil Ansal and Gopal Ansal on a petition the Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy. The Apex Court had also directed transfer of the appeals to another Bench saying that the previous Judge was ``not able to devote full time to the appeals as he was also in-charge of the Original Side.” Mr. Justice Malhotra on Friday had sent the appeals to the High Court Chief Justice for marking them to another Bench. At present, counsel for Sushil Ansal is making his submission. A Delhi court had last year sentenced Sushil Ansal and Gopal Ansal each to two years’ rigorous imprisonment in the case. Besides them, the court had convicted 11 more accused in the case. Tihar jailSushil and Gopal Ansals are at present in the Central Tihar jail here following their surrender before the trial court on cancellation of their bail by the Supreme Court.
