Producers seek reduction in prices of cinema tickets

HYDERABAD: A delegation of budget film producers has urged the State government to consider their plea to bring down the prices of cinema tickets below Rs. 30 a seat to encourage more moviegoers.

A delegation comprising members of the Telugu Film Producers and AP Film Chamber Producers called on Information Minister Anam Ramnarayan Reddy on Saturday requesting him to reduce prices.

While thanking the government for doing away with the rule that the theatres could sell the tickets of new movies at 70 per cent more than the existing rates for the first two weeks, the delegation lamented that certain big producers were planning to seek hike in prices of tickets up to Rs. 50.

They reasoned that any increase in the rate of ticket above Rs. 30 would benefit only the big producers. A majority of the middle-class was finding it difficult to watch movies because of the exorbitant rates. The government should fix the rates of tickets at Rs. 30, Rs. 20 and Rs. 10 respectively for different classes, they said and lamented that multiplexes were charging Rs. 100 and more for each ticket.

The delegation also wanted certain concessions to the small producers. They complained that big time producers were ensuring that cinema halls screened six to seven shows during the first two weeks of release of a new film there by denying revenue to the government.

The Minister said he would see that justice was done to the small film producers.
