CPI(M) urged not to scuttle Chengara agitation

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Service Society has urged the CPI(M) not to scuttle the Chengara agitation. Its president A.P. Kakkadu said here on Saturday that history would not forgive the party if it did so. He asked the party to find an amicable settlement to the issue.

Mr. Kakkadu contended that those behind the agitation were the poorest of the poor workers. If the government wanted to do justice to the Dalits and tribal people, it should settle the stir by providing land to the landless.

‘National policy’

He wondered why the CPI(M), which had an Adivasi Kshema Sabha, an SC Cell, and agricultural workers’ union under it, was opposing this stir for land.

If the developments in Nandigram and Singur were pointers, the party’s anti-poor stand was its national policy.

It had adopted an anti-worker and pro-employer policy in both the places. Same was the case in Chengara too, he alleged.
