Security stepped up in State

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The police have stepped up security in the State following the serial blasts at crowded market places in New Delhi on Saturday evening.

The police have asked the public to report suspiciously abandoned bags, parcels and vehicles parked in a neglected manner at market places, bus stands, railway stations, bus stops and near festival venues.

Citizens should specifically look for suspiciously abandoned flower pots, bags, lunch boxes, radio, covered plastic buckets, parcels, ownerless vehicles (bicycles, cars and motorbikes) and suitcases.

The police said there was no cause for panic. So far, there is no indication that any terrorist group is currently targeting Kerala. The police fear that fundamentalist elements in the State could exploit the charged situation to spread rumours and sow communal discord.

They said they have asked major hospitals, including those in the private sector, to stand by for any emergency. Private ambulance services and companies having earth-moving equipment have been put on alert. The Fire and Rescue Services is in a high state of preparedness. Neighbourhood watch groups have been alerted.

The police said they were checking vehicles entering and leaving Kerala. They are patrolling important stretches of certain inter-State waterways. The police have posted pickets in communally sensitive areas. They are checking hotels, lodges and resorts for suspicious elements.
